We cleaned this arched, fan-style window in Rotonda West, FL, and photographed it before and after. Before, the glass had specks, and cobwebs and bits of debris clung to the white grille bars, frame and sill. After, the glass is clear and the frame, bars and sill are clean.

What the window looked like before
The window is an arched, fan-style unit set into a stucco wall, with white grille bars fanning out across the glass. In the before photos, small dark specks dot the glass. Cobweb strands and bits of debris cling to the grille bars and the white frame, sit on the sill, and gather along the bottom edge of the glass.

What we did
We cleaned the glass, the white grille bars, the frame and the sill. The after photos show clear glass that reflects the sky and palm fronds, and a white frame, grille bars and sill with the cobwebs and debris gone.
Why arched windows with grille bars take more care
A plain rectangular pane has four straight edges and a flat sill. This window has a curved top and grille bars that fan out across the glass. That is more edges and corners where cobwebs and debris can settle, and more places to check once the glass is done.
Window style is one of the things that changes the price of a cleaning, as our guide to window cleaning cost explains: panes divided into small sections have far more edges to clean than one large pane.
How we clean the glass
We use a traditional squeegee-and-solution method and finish windows by hand. A cleaning solution loosens the dirt, a rubber-bladed squeegee pulls the dirty water off the glass, and the edges are wiped dry, so nothing is left behind to dry into spots. A pressure washer never touches the glass. Our guide to squeegee vs. water-fed pole window cleaning explains why.
Water quality is part of why we work this way in Rotonda West. Charlotte County Utilities calls its water moderately hard and says water spots are caused by calcium carbonate, which occurs naturally in water. If sprinklers or a hose put that water on glass and it dries there, it can leave white spots. Squeegeeing each pane by hand takes the water off before it can dry.
How often should Rotonda West windows be cleaned?
Our guide suggests cleaning exterior glass at least twice a year anywhere in Florida, and about every three months near the water, under heavy tree cover, or where sprinklers hit the glass. The Rotonda West Association counts twenty-six miles of canals in the community, plus ponds and lakes, so check how close your windows are to the water. If your lot touches a canal, pond or lake, plan on about every three months. The full schedule is in our guide to how often to clean windows in Florida.
Cobwebs and debris gather again over time. A Home Care Membership puts four visits a year on the calendar, so you do not have to remember to book. If your windows have screens, we can wash those too: see window screen cleaning in Rotonda West.
