Streaks are leftover cleaning solution, dirt, or water that dried on the glass. The traditional squeegee-and-solution method avoids them because a rubber blade pulls the dirty water, and everything in it, off the pane. That is the method Shine Otter uses on every window, every time, with no shortcuts.
Why windows streak
- Dirty water dries on the glass. Whatever is in the water, from dust to pollen to old cleaner, is left behind when it dries.
- Too much solution, or solution that isn't fully wiped off, leaves a film.
- A dirty or worn squeegee blade drags grime across the pane instead of pulling it off.
- Drying too fast. Hot sun and wind can dry solution before it is wiped away.
Florida adds its own marks, like salt film near the water, spring pollen, and sprinkler overspray. Our guide to how often to clean windows in Florida explains what lands on your glass and how fast.
How the squeegee method works
- Wash. A cleaning solution goes on the glass and loosens dirt, film, and residue.
- Pull. A rubber-bladed squeegee pulls the dirty water off in smooth passes, so nothing is left to dry into spots.
- Wipe. The edges and corners are wiped dry by hand.

What we do on every window
- A traditional squeegee-and-solution method, every time. We don't pressure wash glass.
- Up close on each pane. We deal with trouble spots as we find them.
- Edges wiped by hand, for a crisp finish right up to the frame.
- Screens washed and rehung in their original spots when they are part of the job.

What a squeegee can't fix
Streak-free doesn't mean every mark comes off. Mineral spots from hard water or sprinklers can bake onto glass over months, and routine cleaning may not lift them. Our guide to sprinkler stains on Florida homes explains how to tell minerals from rust.
How to check a clean window yourself
- Look at the glass from an angle, in daylight, where streaks show best.
- Check the corners and edges, where water and grime collect.
- Look at the frame and sill, not just the glass.
- Check again once the glass is fully dry.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my windows streak after cleaning?
Streaks are usually leftover solution, dirt, or water that dried on the glass, often from solution that was not fully wiped off or a dirty squeegee blade.
Does Shine Otter pressure wash windows?
No. We use a traditional squeegee-and-solution method rather than pressure washing glass.
Will my windows stay streak-free?
A cleaning leaves the glass clear, but pollen, dust, salt, and sprinkler overspray settle on it again over time. How fast depends on your home. See how often to clean windows in Florida for a simple schedule.
